Dump Trailer Towing Laws and Weight Limits in California

California enforces trailer rules strictly. Knowing the limits before you buy keeps you legal on every job and avoids costly roadside stops.

Speed and Lane Rules

Vehicles towing a trailer travel at 55 mph statewide. Stay in the right lane or the two right lanes on highways with four or more lanes each way.

Plan longer travel times for cross-state hauls. The lower limit adds up quickly on a 300 mile run.

Brake and Licence Requirements

Trailers over 1,500 lb gross weight need working brakes. Electric brakes with a cab-mounted controller are the standard setup.

You need a Class A non-commercial licence once a trailer exceeds 10,000 lb gross weight behind a private vehicle. Commercial use adds further requirements.

Lighting, Chains and Tarps

Run two safety chains crossed under the coupler. Keep every clearance light working.

Cover loose loads. California fines uncovered loads that spill material onto the roadway, so a tarp kit pays for itself fast.

Register and Insure Correctly

Register the trailer with the DMV and carry the paperwork. Add the trailer to your policy before the first haul.

We supply a bill of sale, MSO and full weight documentation with every unit so registration goes smoothly.
